Tinubu Accepts King Charles’ Invitation for Historic UK State Visit After 37 Years

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will embark on a historic State Visit to the United Kingdom later this month, following an official invitation from King Charles III, marking the first such visit by a Nigerian leader in 37 years.

The British royal family announced the development on Saturday via its official X handle, @RoyalFamily, confirming that President Tinubu and the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, will be hosted at Windsor Castle.

According to the post, “The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accompanied by the First Lady, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, has accepted an invitation from His Majesty The King to pay a State Visit to the United Kingdom from Wednesday, 18th March to Thursday, 19th March 2026. The King and Queen will host the State Visit at Windsor Castle.”

The confirmation was also echoed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who described the visit as a major diplomatic milestone in Nigeria–United Kingdom relations.

Posting via his verified X handle, @aonanuga1956, the presidential spokesman stated: “First state visit of a Nigerian leader to the UK in 37 years confirmed. President Tinubu and First Lady Remi Tinubu to be hosted by King Charles and Queen Camilla from 18th March to 19th March 2026.”

The forthcoming visit is expected to strengthen bilateral ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, with diplomacy, trade, security cooperation, and cultural relations likely to feature prominently during the engagements.
