Tinubu Assures Stronger Nigeria–UK Ties in Historic Windsor Castle Speech

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed confidence that the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom will continue to flourish, as he delivered a landmark speech at a state banquet held in his honour at Windsor Castle.

Speaking on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, the Nigerian leader described the moment as historic, noting that he was proud to represent the country while reaffirming the enduring ties between both nations.

“Your Majesty, I am confident that the friendship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom will continue to grow,” Tinubu declared.

The event, hosted by King Charles III and attended by members of the British Royal Family, marked a significant moment in Nigeria’s diplomatic history, with Tinubu becoming the first Nigerian leader to speak at Windsor Castle.

A Historic Moment at Windsor Castle

In his remarks, Tinubu highlighted the symbolic importance of the venue, describing Windsor Castle as a monument of continuity and institutional evolution.

“As the first Nigerian leader to speak here at Windsor Castle, which has served the British Crown for nearly a millennium, is particularly historic,” he said.

He added that the castle has witnessed the evolution of governance, culture, and public life, not only in Britain but across the world

Shared Values and Democratic Foundations

The President emphasised the shared democratic heritage between Nigeria and the UK, referencing foundational documents and thinkers that have shaped governance systems globally.

“The Magna Carta of 1215 laid the early foundations for the rule of law and the development of parliamentary democracy,” Tinubu noted.

He also acknowledged the influence of renowned philosophers such as Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Edmund Burke, whose ideas, he said, continue to shape modern governance.

According to Tinubu, Nigeria’s legal system, parliamentary structure, and civil service have all drawn inspiration from British models, adapted to suit the country’s unique context.

Diaspora योगदान and Cultural Ties

Tinubu described Nigerians in the United Kingdom as a vital link between both countries, praising their contributions across key sectors.

“The Nigerian community in the United Kingdom has become one of the most dynamic diaspora communities worldwide,” he said.

He noted the significant role of Nigerian professionals in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), particularly doctors and nurses who continue to strengthen healthcare delivery.

The President also pointed to shared cultural connections through sports and entertainment, mentioning prominent figures of Nigerian heritage.

Security, Commonwealth and Future Cooperation
Addressing regional security concerns, Tinubu stressed Nigeria’s role in stabilising West Africa, particularly in tackling terrorism linked to the Sahel region.

“Nigeria carries an enormous responsibility to help safeguard regional stability,” he stated.

He added that collaboration with the United Kingdom remains crucial in addressing these threats and strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Tinubu further highlighted the importance of the Commonwealth, describing it as a platform that continues to unite member nations under shared values.

Reflection on Nigeria’s Democratic Journey
In a deeply personal reflection, the President expressed gratitude to the United Kingdom for its support during Nigeria’s struggle for democracy.

“I wish to express Nigeria’s deep gratitude to this great nation for the refuge and support it extended during the dark years of military dictatorship,” he said.

Tinubu recalled his time in exile, noting that he once received protection from British authorities during threats from Nigeria’s former military regime.

Looking Ahead
Reaffirming Nigeria’s optimism about the future, Tinubu described the country as a nation driven by youthful energy, innovation, and ambition.

“We are a nation of diverse and vibrant people, of young people dreaming big… determined to realise their full potential,” he said.

He concluded by calling for a toast to the enduring partnership between both nations.

“To the special bond between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, and to the bright future that we shall build together.”

The state visit is expected to further strengthen diplomatic, economic, and security ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom as both countries look toward deeper collaboration in the years ahead.
