Tinubu celebrates House leader Julius Ihonvbere at 70, hails his service, leadership and legacy

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to the Leader of the House of Representatives, Professor Julius Omozuanvbo Kayode Ihonvbere, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, describing him as a distinguished statesman, scholar and patriot whose life has been defined by selfless service to Nigeria.

In a goodwill message issued to mark the milestone, the President joined members of the Ihonvbere family, lawmakers, associates and the people of Owan East/West Federal Constituency of Edo State in celebrating the veteran politician.

Tinubu said Ihonvbere’s journey from academia to public service reflects an enduring commitment to nation-building, noting that his contributions have left a lasting impact in education, governance and legislative leadership.

The President recalled that before joining partisan politics, Ihonvbere built an outstanding academic career as a renowned political scientist. He also acknowledged his work with the Ford Foundation, where he served as a programme officer in the Peace and Social Justice Programme and managed the “Pluralism and Governance” portfolio before returning to Nigeria in 2002 to serve in the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

According to Tinubu, Ihonvbere also played a significant role in attracting international support for Nigeria’s pro-democracy organisations, including the Truth Commission established during the Obasanjo administration.

Reflecting on the lawmaker’s public service, the President said, “Ihonvbere has brought dignity, intellect, civility, and principle to public life. He has demonstrated that excellence in academia can also be replicated in public life.”

Tinubu further highlighted what he described as the four defining pillars of Ihonvbere’s legacy at 70.

He praised the House Leader for providing effective leadership in the Green Chamber, saying, “As Leader of the House, you have helped stabilise the 10th Assembly, foster bipartisan cooperation, and ensure the Renewed Hope legislative agenda moves with focus and patriotism.”

The President also commended Ihonvbere’s contributions to higher education, noting that his academic accomplishments and advocacy for reforms in the tertiary education sector continue to inspire young Nigerians.

He lauded the federal lawmaker’s representation of Owan East/West Federal Constituency, describing him as a leader who remains connected to his people and serves them with humility.

Tinubu equally acknowledged Ihonvbere’s loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying his steadfastness and counsel have continued to strengthen the party’s commitment to building a more prosperous Nigeria.

Commending the celebrant’s leadership qualities, the President said, “On this milestone, I commend your wisdom, dedication, and the grace with which you carry the burdens of leadership. Nigeria needs more of your kind of statesmanship at this critical time.”

He prayed for God’s continued guidance, good health and renewed strength for the House Leader.

“As you celebrate this 70th birthday, may God Almighty grant you renewed strength, good health, and many more years of impactful service to our nation and people.”

The President concluded his tribute with the message: “Happy 70th birthday, Leader Ihonvbere. May your light continue to shine for Nigeria.”
