President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged young Nigerians to remain committed to building the country despite prevailing economic and social challenges, telling them that Nigeria’s future depends largely on their energy, innovation and participation in democracy.
In his Democracy Day address on Thursday, the President made a direct appeal to the nation’s youth, encouraging them to see Nigeria not only as their homeland but also as a place where they can pursue their ambitions and contribute to national development.
“To our young people: Nigeria is your home and your future. Build here, code here, work here, and vote here,” Tinubu said.
The President’s remarks come amid growing concerns over the increasing number of young Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad, a trend popularly referred to as “Japa.”
Without directly mentioning the phenomenon, Tinubu stressed that the progress of any nation depends on citizens who remain committed to solving problems and building institutions.
“Every great nation was built by those who stayed to solve problems, not by those who abandoned ship,” he said.
Tinubu linked the future of Nigeria’s democracy and economic growth to the active participation of young people, describing them as critical stakeholders in the country’s development journey.
He argued that democracy must ultimately translate into opportunities that improve the lives of citizens, particularly the younger generation.
According to the President, the next phase of Nigeria’s democratic journey is not only about preserving political freedoms but also creating economic opportunities that allow young people to thrive.
“June 12, 1993, revealed the possibility of a true Nigerian nation. The heroes of June 12 secured political freedom. Our challenge is to secure economic freedom,” he stated.
The President maintained that ongoing economic reforms are aimed at laying the foundation for long-term prosperity through investments, job creation, infrastructure development and improved governance.
While acknowledging that many Nigerians are still facing economic hardship, Tinubu said his administration remains focused on reducing inflation, expanding food production, creating jobs and improving living standards.
He urged young Nigerians not to lose faith in the country, insisting that their talents, creativity and participation are essential to building a stronger and more prosperous nation.
As Nigeria marked 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, Tinubu called on the younger generation to embrace hope and civic responsibility, particularly through active engagement in elections and governance.
