Less than 24 hours after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assured grieving residents in Plateau State that renewed violence would not recur, fresh attacks erupted in parts of the country, raising serious concerns about Nigeria’s worsening security situation.
President Tinubu had made the promise on April 2, 2026, at the Jos Plateau State airport, telling victims and families affected by the violence: “I promise you that this experience will not repeat itself.”
However, within hours of that assurance, another brutal attack reportedly occurred in Nyamgo Gyel, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, where several innocent citizens were killed.
The situation has since escalated, with multiple states experiencing deadly attacks, abductions, and destruction of property.
Fresh Violence Spreads Across States
Only days after the President’s promise, Nasarawa State was thrown into mourning as gunmen attacked the Akyawa and Udege Kasa communities. At least 11 people were reportedly killed, while many residents fled for safety. Several houses were also burnt, leaving families displaced and others still missing.
In Zamfara State, one of the largest mass abductions in recent times was recorded as gunmen reportedly kidnapped about 150 people from Kurfa Danya and Kurfan Magaji communities.
On the same day, terrorists in Borno State stormed Chibok, killing four security officers and setting homes ablaze, further worsening the already fragile security situation in the region.
Easter Sunday Bloodshed in Benue
Violence also struck Benue State on Easter Sunday, where more than 17 people were reportedly killed in another deadly attack. Communities were left devastated, with several residents unaccounted for and homes destroyed.
The attacks have heightened fears among residents who say they feel increasingly vulnerable despite repeated government assurances.
Fresh Attack in Kaduna Churches
Meanwhile, in Kaduna State, suspected terrorists reportedly attacked churches in the Ariko community of Kachia Local Government Area, killing several worshippers and abducting many others.
The attacks, which occurred during Easter celebrations, have sparked outrage and renewed calls for decisive action to address insecurity across the country.
Growing Concerns Over Security Promises
Reacting to the wave of attacks, critics questioned the effectiveness of security measures, pointing to the President’s earlier assurance.
“This Experience Will Not Repeat Itself,” the President had promised.
However, observers argued that the continued attacks across Plateau, Nasarawa, Zamfara, Borno, Benue, and Kaduna suggest that the country is facing a deepening security crisis.
“This represents a failure of leadership and responsibility, and sadly, Nigerians are paying for it with their lives,” said former Presidential candidate, Peter Obi
He further stressed that attackers continue to operate freely, emboldened by what many describe as slow or insufficient responses.
“The primary responsibility of any government is to protect lives and property; however, this responsibility is failing today. Nigerians are being slaughtered in their homes, in their communities, and in the very places they should feel safest.”
The continued wave of violence has prompted renewed calls for urgent and coordinated security interventions across affected regions.
“This is a national emergency. Nigeria is bleeding, and the situation is worsening and increasingly helpless,” he concluded.
The message ended with a renewed call for change, declaring: “A New Nigeria is Possible.”
