Veteran actress, Patience Ozokwor, popularly known as Mama G, has advised parents against over pampering their children, warning that shielding them from every form of struggle could negatively affect them in the future.
Speaking on parenting and inheritance, the actress said, “One way when you say, l don’t want my children to suffer what I suffered when I was growing up You see, that’s the best way to destroy your children.”
According to her, parents should not deliberately make their children suffer but should allow them to experience some struggles and understand the process of achieving success.
She explained, “I’m not saying allow them to suffer, what I’m saying is allow them to struggle. Go through the process.”
Mama G noted that children who grow up surrounded by their parents’ wealth without knowing the sacrifices behind it may eventually become entitled and fight over properties when their parents are gone.
She said, “When you keep the things that you have and let them know that, ‘You go get yours, this is mine.’”
The actress further stressed that children should be taught the value of hard work and should experience little p@ins that would help them appreciate what they have.
She added, “But when you pamper them, they don’t come out to be anything.”
Mama G also revealed how she approached her own child, saying, “I told my son, My house isn’t yours, go and work for your own.”
She maintained that properly trained children from wealthy homes can grow up to become better than their parents because they understand that success does not come easily.
