Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s prediction on the 2027 presidential election, questioning his political influence.
Speaking during a media chat in Abuja on Tuesday, Wike claimed that fewer than 200 people attended Amaechi’s town hall meeting in Cross River State.
He said Amaechi had argued that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar was well placed to win the 2027 election because of the regional spread of the leading presidential contenders.
According to Wike, Amaechi told the gathering that Atiku was from the North, while President Bola Tinubu, Peter Obi and Donald Duke were from the South.
The minister questioned how such an argument could be used to conclude that Atiku had already won the election.
Wike said it was surprising for a key opposition figure to make such a prediction before the election campaign had even begun.
He also questioned the assumption that Atiku’s northern support alone would guarantee victory in 2027.
The FCT minister pointed to the 2023 presidential election, where Tinubu defeated both Atiku and Obi despite similar political calculations.
Wike, however, said the 2027 election would not follow the same pattern as the previous contest.
He insisted that Nigeria’s political landscape would change before the next general election.
The minister maintained that opposition alliances should not assume victory based on regional considerations alone.
His remarks highlight the growing political battle between the Tinubu camp and the emerging opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
