Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu

Gov. Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has commenced the distribution of N100 million donated by the state government to the victims of the recent inferno at the Sokoto central market.

This is contained in a statement signed by Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Malam Abubakar Bawa, issued to newsmen on Saturday in Sokoto.

Bawa said Aliyu was represented by the Committee’s Chairman, Sen. Sahabi Gada, during the cash assistance distribution, saying that the beneficiaries were categorised based on the magnitude of their losses.

He explained that most affected traders received N19 million each, while those with lesser losses got N 300,000 each.

Bawa added that the committee had done a thorough job in order to ensure that only those affected by the calamity benefit from the gesture.

He quoted Gada as saying, ” We visited all the areas affected by the inferno in order to ensure the right persons get the support.

” What the Governor is giving out is not a compensation but a relief assistance for those affected to cushion the effects and at least have some capital to start business.”

The chairman called on the beneficiaries to judiciously utilize the money given to them so that the purpose for which it was given could be achieved.

He added that the Chairman of the Motorcycles Sellers Association in the state, Alhaji Garba Gwazi, expressed gratitude to Aliyu for the gesture, adding that it demonstrated the love, care and concern he has for the people of the state. (NAN)
