AAU senior lecturer found dead in Edo hotel room after having fun with woman

The Edo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, who was found dead in a hotel room in Ekpoma.

According to the police, the lecturer, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe of the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, died on Monday, October 5, 2026, after checking into a hotel in the Mosco area of Esan West Local Government Area.

Police spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said the incident was reported at about 8 p.m. after the lecturer lodged in the hotel with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.

The police said Uwuigbe later asked the woman to go out and buy water for him. When she returned to the room, she reportedly found him lying lifeless and immediately raised the alarm. Officers were alerted, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death began.

The police have arrested and detained the 21-year-old woman, the hotel owner and the hotel manager to help with ongoing investigations.

Authorities stressed that the cause of death has not yet been established and that inquiries are still ongoing. Uwuigbe’s body has been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital Mortuary pending further investigation. Ambrose Alli University confirmed that the deceased was a member of its academic staff.

However, the university said the incident happened outside the campus and had no connection with its official activities.

The institution also clarified that the 21-year-old woman involved in the case is not a student of Ambrose Alli University.
