ABU tuition fees hike: Tinubu sinking more families into poverty – NDC

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has criticised the reported increase in tuition fees at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, saying it will place more pressure on Nigerian families.

NDC spokesman, Osa Director, stated this in a post on his X handle on Thursday while reacting to reports that ABU had increased fees for returning students for the 2026/2027 academic session.

According to him, students who previously paid between N62,000 and N84,000 will now pay between N143,000 and N298,000, depending on their programmes and levels.

Director accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of introducing policies that have increased hardship and pushed many Nigerians into poverty.

He said many working-class parents who rely on federal universities to educate their children may struggle to cope with the new charges.

The NDC spokesman expressed sympathy with students affected by the fee increase, saying they are among those facing the impact of government policies.

He assured Nigerian youths that a government led by the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, would prioritise education funding and create opportunities for young people.

Director also called on Nigerians to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and vote against the current administration in future elections.

He urged ABU students and other Nigerian youths to remain hopeful, promising that the NDC would provide better leadership if elected.

The Federal Government and ABU authorities have not yet publicly responded to the claims made by the NDC spokesman.
