NDC condemns Arrest of member over Enugu political attack video, demands immediate Release

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the remand of one of its members, Mr. Ani Chidi, by an Enugu East Magistrate’s Court over a video allegedly showing an attack on party members during a political meeting in Obuoffia, Awkunanaw.

Chidi was arraigned by the Enugu State Police Command on Monday on three counts bordering on cybercrime and alleged criminal defamation under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, as amended in 2024.

The opposition party alleged that its member was being punished for recording and sharing evidence of the incident instead of those responsible for the reported attack.

In a statement, the NDC described the action as unfair, accusing the police of failing to act against the alleged attackers while prosecuting the person who captured the incident on video.

The party said law enforcement agencies should protect citizens and uphold justice rather than use their powers against opposition members.

The NDC also criticised the Nigeria Police Force and called for the immediate and unconditional release of Chidi.

The party maintained that arresting its member over the video amounted to an attempt to silence accountability and prevent Nigerians from knowing what happened during the political meeting.

The police authorities have not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of filing this report.
