After Ondo Aircraft Crash, NAF Assures Community of Safety Measures Over Environmental Concerns

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has assured residents of Igbokoda, Ondo State, that necessary steps will be taken to address concerns over possible environmental effects following an aircraft accident in the community.

The assurance followed concerns raised by residents over an offensive smell and fears about the possible impact of the crash on their surroundings.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the NAF spokesman, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the force understands the concerns of the affected community and remains committed to their safety and wellbeing.

The Air Force said it recognises the fear and uncertainty that may follow an incident of such nature, adding that the situation is being handled with seriousness.

“The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) acknowledges the concerns expressed by residents of Igbokoda, Ondo State, particularly reports of an offensive odour and fears of possible environmental impact following the aircraft accident,” Ejodame stated.

He added that the NAF was working with relevant agencies to ensure the safe and organised recovery of the aircraft wreckage.

According to him, environmental and public health authorities will be engaged after the recovery exercise to properly assess the area and determine any required intervention.

The Air Force explained that the assessment would help identify possible environmental risks and guide appropriate measures to protect residents.

“The NAF remains concerned about the wellbeing of the affected community and is committed to constructive engagement with relevant stakeholders to ensure that appropriate measures are taken in the interest of public health, safety and environmental wellbeing,” the statement added.

The military authorities said recovery operations are still ongoing at the crash site, while efforts continue with partner agencies to manage the aftermath of the incident.
