The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has commenced an investigation into the management of a ₦100 million donation received by its Owerri Branch from the Imo State Government.

The NBA President, Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, announced the formation of a three-member committee to examine concerns raised by members of the branch over the receipt, handling and disbursement of the funds.

The decision followed complaints from members and a request by 183 members for an Extraordinary General Meeting to address the matter.

The committee is made up of the NBA General Secretary, Afam Okeke; Third Vice-President, Iniobong Irene Pepple; and Treasurer, Esther Jimoh.

Badejo-Okusanya said the panel has been given the responsibility of reviewing financial documents, hearing from relevant persons and submitting its report with recommendations on or before October 30, 2026.

She explained that representatives of the NBA leadership would attend the Extraordinary General Meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 15, 2026, to observe proceedings and help ensure an orderly process.

The NBA President cautioned that the investigation should not be interpreted as a conclusion that anyone has committed wrongdoing.

“It is important to emphasise that the constitution of the committee does not amount to a finding against any person,” she said.

She assured members that all individuals whose actions are questioned would be allowed to present their side of the matter before any decision is reached.

“Everyone whose conduct is called into question will be given a fair opportunity to respond,” Badejo-Okusanya added.

She also directed that all documents connected to the funds should be preserved and made available to the committee to support a transparent investigation.

According to her, the NBA remains committed to resolving internal concerns through fairness, accountability and respect for due process.

“Accountability must go hand in hand with due process, and our response must sustain members’ confidence in the Association,” the NBA President said.

The development is part of efforts by the association’s leadership to address members’ concerns and strengthen transparency in the administration of NBA branches.
