The Oyo State Police Command has launched an investigation into a deadly attack on people who gathered to welcome Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat back to Ibadan.
The command’s spokesman, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Ibadan.
He said the attack happened shortly after the group left Molete and was heading to Iwo Road, where the Agidigbo office is located.
According to the police, suspected hoodlums ambushed the group during the procession. One of the victims, 40-year-old Azeez Tajudeen from Oke Amu in Otesiwaju Local Government Area of Oyo State, suffered a severe injury to his right eye.
He was rushed to a hospital but was later confirmed dead at the State Hospital, Ring Road, Ibadan. His body has been deposited in the hospital mortuary.
Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, has ordered the transfer of the case to the Command Monitoring Unit for a thorough and discreet investigation.
The police said those behind the attack would be identified and brought to justice.
The command also urged political aspirants, party leaders and event organisers to notify the police at least 48 hours before any procession or public gathering to allow adequate security arrangements, while appealing to anyone with useful information to assist the ongoing investigation.
