Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), coming a day after the Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor Diri’s resignation which was announced by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah stated that 19 members of the Bayelsa State Assembly have also submitted their resignation letters from the PDP.
Though Alabrah did not say what is likely to be the next move by the governor, but it is widely held that Diri is set to join the APC.
With his resignation, the south south region which used to be the stronghold of the PDP has progressively moved to the APC except Rivers State which had been embroiled in political crisis
Other states in the region that are led by APC led administration include Cross River, Edo, Delta and Akwa Ibom states.
Reacting to Diri’s resignation, some citizens expressed dismay over the development, saying that Diri who is in his second term as governor did not need to defect from the PDP.
