Commanding Officer, 6 soldiers killed in IED explosion as troops repel terrorist attack in Monguno

Tragedy struck the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) following a deadly Improvised Explosive Device (IED) incident that claimed the lives of a Commanding Officer and six other soldiers after troops successfully repelled a terrorist attack in Monguno, Borno State.

Troops of Sector 3, Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, came under what the military described as an isolated terrorist attack at Charlie 13 location in Monguno in the late hours of April 12, 2026.

However, following a fierce exchange of gunfire, the troops overpowered the attackers and forced them to retreat, maintaining full control of the location.

In a press statement issued by the Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Una, the military confirmed that the Commanding Officer lost his life while moving to assess the operational situation.

“Regrettably, the Commanding Officer, while courageously proceeding to the troops’ location to personally assess the situation, encountered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) which severely affected his vehicle, leading to his death alongside 6 other gallant personnel,” the statement said.

The military described the late officer’s conduct as a demonstration of exceptional leadership and bravery, noting that his actions reflected the finest traditions of military service.

“His actions, even after the immediate threat had been neutralised, reflected the highest traditions of military leadership; courage, selfless service, and leading from the front,” the statement added.

Lieutenant Colonel Una further emphasized that the officer’s decision to move toward his troops despite the danger underscored his commitment to their safety and operational effectiveness.

“His willingness to move towards the troops in the heat of the battle, despite the prevailing danger, stands as a profound testament to his valour, sense of duty, and unwavering commitment to the welfare and operational effectiveness of his men,” he stated.

Operation HADIN KAI also expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the fallen personnel as heroes who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to Nigeria.

“Operation HADIN KAI deeply mourns the loss of this exceptional officer and the other brave personnel who paid the supreme price in service to the nation. Their sacrifice will forever remain etched in the memory of the Armed Forces and the grateful nation they served,” the statement concluded.

The military reiterated its resolve to continue ongoing operations against insurgents in the North East, assuring Nigerians that the sacrifices of fallen troops would further strengthen the commitment to restoring lasting peace in the region.
