Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Catholic Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese, Most Rev. Peter Nworie Chukwu, describing his passing as a significant loss to the Church and humanity.
In a condolence message shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi paid glowing tribute to the late cleric, noting that his life reflected faith, humility, and service to both God and society.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Most Rev. Peter Nworie Chukwu, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki. His life was a shining testimony of faith, humility, and unwavering dedication to the service of God and humanity,” Obi stated.
The former Anambra State governor also highlighted the bishop’s contributions to spiritual growth and community development, emphasizing that his ministry left a lasting impact on both the Church and society at large.
“Through his ministry, he strengthened the spiritual life of the faithful and contributed meaningfully to the growth of the Church and society,” he added.
Obi further extended condolences to the Diocese of Abakaliki, members of the clergy, religious community, and the bishop’s family, noting that the loss is felt beyond the local church.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki, the clergy, religious, and lay faithful, as well as to his family and loved ones. I also commiserate with the entire Universal Church, which has lost a devoted shepherd in the vineyard of the Lord,” he said.
Praying for the repose of the bishop’s soul, Obi called on God to comfort those mourning the late cleric.
“May his soul find eternal rest in the bosom of the Lord, and may God grant comfort, strength, and peace to all who mourn this great loss,” he concluded.
The late Bishop Chukwu served the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki with distinction and was widely respected for his pastoral leadership, humility, and commitment to social and spiritual development.
