Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has commended Nigerian music star Davido for using his global platform at the FIFA Club World Cup to draw attention to the country’s security challenges, particularly the plight of abducted schoolchildren.
In a statement shared on his X handle, Obi said Nigeria’s absence from major global sporting events such as the World Cup is not due to a shortage of talent but rather a failure of leadership to create an environment where young people can thrive.
According to him, the tournament once again showcased the immense potential of Nigerians, both through the performances of Nigerian artists on the global stage and the presence of many Nigerians representing other countries in football.
“The Commendable Act of Nigerian Artists at the World Cup,” Obi wrote, adding that Nigeria’s absence from the competition “stems not from a lack of talent but from a conspicuous deficiency in political leadership that has failed to create an enabling environment for talent development.”
He noted that the achievements of Nigerians at the tournament should serve as a wake-up call for political leaders to invest more deliberately in youth development and talent cultivation.
“This assertion is underscored by two notable occurrences during the tournament: the vibrant participation and impressive performances of Nigerian artists, and the presence of numerous Nigerians representing other nations on the field. These observations present a significant imperative for Nigeria’s political leaders to actively foster an environment in which the nation’s youth can fully realize their potential,” he stated.
Obi reserved special praise for Davido, describing the singer’s action as a powerful use of celebrity influence to advocate for victims of insecurity.
“Furthermore, Davido’s impactful gesture in drawing global attention to Nigeria’s security challenges warrants commendation,” he said.
Obi explained that the award-winning artiste appeared in a custom black leather jacket carrying the message, “BRING THEM HOME,” while also displaying the names of 39 schoolchildren and seven teachers who were recently abducted by bandits in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
“He prominently displayed the names of schoolchildren who had been held captive for an extended period, advocating for their safe return. By utilizing his international platform, Davido effectively highlighted Nigeria’s security crisis, transcending mere entertainment,” Obi stated.
The former Anambra State governor argued that Nigeria’s worsening security situation deserves greater international attention, particularly in light of what he described as the government’s inability to adequately tackle the challenge.
“The pervasive insecurity in Nigeria merits international scrutiny, particularly given the government’s apparent inability to effectively address the situation,” he said.
Despite the challenges, Obi expressed optimism about the country’s future, insisting that national renewal remains possible.
“Nevertheless, the prospect of a revitalized Nigeria remains achievable,” he added.
The statement has since generated reactions online, with many Nigerians applauding Davido’s advocacy and Obi’s call for stronger leadership and improved opportunities for the country’s youth.
