Lagos Police Order Removal of Covered Number Plates, Begin Statewide Enforcement

Lagos State Police Command has announced the commencement of a statewide enforcement operation targeting vehicles with covered, obscured, unauthorised, defaced, or missing registration number plates as part of efforts to strengthen security across the state.

The exercise, which begins on Monday, June 15, 2026, follows a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, aimed at improving public safety and preventing criminal elements from concealing their identities while carrying out unlawful activities.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the operation will be supervised by the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai.

The statement noted that the commissioner had directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) across the state to ensure strict enforcement of the directive within their jurisdictions.

“He further directed that any vehicle found violating the directive be impounded and subjected to thorough investigation in accordance with extant laws and established procedures.”

The police explained that the enforcement drive is not intended to punish or inconvenience law-abiding motorists but is designed to improve the ability of security agencies to identify vehicles, investigate crimes, track suspects, and enhance overall security in Lagos.

“The Command wishes to assure members of the public that this enforcement exercise is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding motorists. Rather, it is a proactive security measure designed to enhance the capacity of Police operatives to identify vehicles, investigate crimes, track criminal suspects, and strengthen the overall security architecture of the State.”

The command therefore advised motorists, transport operators, fleet managers, and vehicle owners to ensure that their vehicles display valid and clearly visible registration number plates at all times.

It also urged vehicle owners to keep all relevant vehicle documents updated and readily available for inspection whenever required by law enforcement officers.

Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, the police called on residents to support ongoing efforts aimed at improving security in the state.

“The Command remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting lives and property and creating a safer environment for all residents and visitors in the State.”

The command further appealed to Lagos residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons, vehicles, movements, or activities through its emergency lines as security agencies intensify efforts to combat crime.

“The success of this initiative, like all policing efforts, depends largely on the cooperation and support of members of the public.”

Residents can report emergencies and suspicious activities through the command’s dedicated emergency numbers: 07061019374, 08065154338, 08063299264, 08039344870, and 09168630929.This version is rewritten in a standard news-report style, avoids copying the structure of the press release, preserves the key direct quotes, and is optimized for search terms such as Lagos Police, number plates, vehicle impoundment, CP Tijani Fatai, and security enforcement in Lagos.
