The Eagle Times Newspaper has been officially launched with a commitment to promote credible journalism, speak for ordinary Nigerians and hold those in positions of authority accountable.
The newspaper was unveiled on Thursday, October 1, 2026, in Abuja, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary. The launch brought together media professionals, government officials, business leaders, legal practitioners, religious leaders and other distinguished guests.
Among those who attended were the Vicar of St. James Anglican Church, Asokoro, Abuja, Venerable Dr. Princewill Ireoba; Lead Consultant/CEO of Management Edge Limited, Dr. Ayodeji Rex Abitogun; Clerk, Media and Public Affairs, Senate, Mrs. Ngozi Chinyelu Mary; and MD/CEO of Dacosa Global Logistics Limited, Mr. Osakwe Azonabor, who represented the Chief Unveiler.
Others included Air Commodore Ohanele, Mr. Emeka Etiaba (SAN), Dr. Chijioke Orikoha, Mr. Chris Amadi, Barrister Adebayo Shomefun, Tabo Okeke, among others.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Publisher of The Eagle Times, Sir Ikechukwu Chukwunyere, said the newspaper was established not simply to add another publication to Nigeria’s media space, but to serve the public interest through responsible journalism.
Chukwunyere said the newspaper’s guiding philosophy, “The Voice For The People, The Watchdog For The Nation,” would shape its journalism, adding that the organisation would listen to Nigerians, tell their stories, investigate important issues and demand accountability from those entrusted with public responsibility.
He assured readers that The Eagle Times would be guided by accuracy, fairness, professionalism and credibility. He said the newspaper would verify information, seek the other side of every allegation and correct its mistakes whenever necessary.
The publisher also disclosed that The Eagle Times would operate as a multimedia organisation, combining its newspaper with digital platforms and The Eagle Times TV. He said the organisation would cover politics, governance, business, security, education, health, technology, sports, entertainment and other issues affecting Nigerians.
In his keynote address, titled “Soaring Above The Noise: The Eagle, The Press And The Courage To Speak Truth To Power,” Dr. Ayodeji Rex Abitogun challenged the new newspaper to maintain its independence and remain committed to truth and public interest. He urged its journalists to investigate beyond the surface, verify information and avoid being influenced by political, commercial or popular pressure.
Abitogun also warned about the growing challenges of misinformation, disinformation and artificial intelligence-generated content, saying journalism must compete on trust rather than speed. He urged The Eagle Times to be courageous without being reckless, critical without becoming cynical and fast, but never faster than the truth.
The launch marked the beginning of a new chapter for The Eagle Times, with the management promising to build a media organisation that gives communities a voice, promotes accountability and celebrates positive developments across Nigeria. As the publisher declared at the ceremony, “Today, we spread our wings. Today, The Eagle Times takes flight.”
