Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has honoured pioneer policewoman, Dame Stella O. Okuyiga, for her contribution to the growth of women in policing in Nigeria.
Disu made the commendation on Tuesday during the public presentation and launch of Okuyiga’s book titled, “The Origin of Police Women in Nigeria: The Story of the Pioneer Women Officers and My Journey in the Nigeria Police Force (1955–1996),” in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The IGP, who served as the Chief Launcher of the book, described the publication as an important record of the history and achievements of women officers in the Nigeria Police Force.
He said Dame Okuyiga, who was among the first 20 women to join the Police Force in 1955, represented a generation of officers whose dedication created opportunities for future female police personnel.
Disu noted that women have continued to make significant contributions in areas such as criminal investigation, intelligence, tactical operations, specialist policing and leadership roles.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Police Force to providing equal opportunities and promoting officers based on professionalism, competence and merit.
The IGP also praised Okuyiga for preserving the experiences and sacrifices of pioneer policewomen, urging police formations, training institutions and libraries to make the book available for future generations.
Responding, Dame Okuyiga thanked the IGP and the Nigeria Police Force for supporting the publication, saying it would help preserve the legacy of women who contributed to policing in Nigeria.
The event was attended by top government officials, senior police officers, traditional rulers, security agencies and other dignitaries, including representatives of the Rivers State Government and the Ministry of Police Affairs.
The Nigeria Police Force said it would continue to preserve its history and recognise officers whose service helped build the institution while ensuring equal career opportunities for all personnel.
