Military eliminates scores of Lakurawa terrorists, recover machine gun, AK-47 rifles in Kebbi

Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have eliminated several Lakurawa terrorists and recovered a cache of weapons, ammunition and other items during a major offensive in Arewa Dandi Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The development was disclosed in a statement on Sunday, which said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts by the military to dismantle terrorist enclaves and restore lasting security across the North-West.

The troops advanced into identified terrorist hideouts around the Gumki general area and made contact with the fleeing terrorists along the fringes of the Nigeria-Niger border.

On sighting the troops, the terrorists engaged them in a firefight but were overwhelmed by the soldiers’ superior firepower, resulting in the elimination of several insurgents, while others fled into the surrounding forest.

A follow-up exploitation operation led to the recovery of one PKT machine gun, AK-47 rifles, a large quantity of 7.62 x 54mm belted ammunition, 7.62mm special ammunition, four motorcycles, two smartphones, ₦87,000 cash and other combat-related items.

The recovered weapons and logistics are expected to weaken the operational capacity of the Lakurawa terrorist group in the area.

The military said troops have sustained a strong operational presence and continue to dominate the general area to prevent the terrorists from regrouping and to guarantee the safety of surrounding communities.
