Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced with profound sadness the passing of two distinguished officers: Assistant Inspector-General of Police Adeleke Taiwo Olatunde (Rtd), who passed away at his Lagos residence on July 23, 2026, and Commissioner of Police Hassan Saleh Gwani, who died on Sunday, July 19, 2026, while receiving treatment in Cairo, Egypt.
This is contained in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu.
The statement said both officers served the Force meritoriously for nearly three decades with dedication, professionalism, and commitment to public safety.
AIG Adeleke Taiwo Olatunde (Rtd) enlisted into the Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on May 18, 1992. Over an exemplary career spanning more than 33 years, he rose through the ranks holding key command and operational positions across Abia, Lagos, Osun, and Benue State Commands, as well as Force Headquarters. Notable appointments include DPO Ikire, AC and DC Operations at Western Port Authority Lagos, Commander of the SWAT Unit at FCID Headquarters, and AIG Operations, from which he honorably retired on November 3, 2025. He is survived by his wife and children.
CP Hassan Saleh Gwani, a native of Yamaltu/Deba Local Government Area of Gombe State, was born on November 11, 1970. Enlisting on November 10, 1997, he dedicated close to three decades of meritorious service to the Force across several strategic roles. Following his passing at the Saudi German Hospital in Cairo after a brief illness, his burial was conducted in Cairo, Egypt, in accordance with Islamic rites.
The leadership of the Force conveys its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the departed officers, commending their selfless service and honor to the nation. The Nigeria Police Force prays that Almighty God grants their souls eternal rest and gives their families the fortitude to bear these irreplaceable losses.
