Obama’s Praise for Njideka Akunyili Crosby Inspires Nigerian Youths, Says Peter Obi

Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has praised internationally acclaimed Nigerian artist, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, following recognition from former United States President Barack Obama over her latest artistic milestone.

In a post shared on X on Tuesday, Obi expressed pride over Obama’s public celebration of Akunyili Crosby, whose work was unveiled as the first joint portrait of former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama.

According to Obi, the achievement highlights the immense potential of Nigerian youths and serves as an inspiration for young people striving for excellence.

“I am immensely proud to see the official tweet from former U.S. President @BarackObama, celebrating the incredible brilliance of our own Njideka @AkunyiliCrosby,” Obi wrote.

He added, “Her exceptional talent has brought our shared history to the global stage through the unveiling of the first joint portrait of President Obama and former First Lady @MichelleObama.”

The former Anambra State governor described the accomplishment as a testament to what can be achieved through dedication, discipline and hard work.

“This monumental achievement is a powerful reminder to Nigerian youths of what is possible when talent is met with hard work and discipline,” he stated.

Obi also noted that Akunyili Crosby, daughter of the late Dr. Chike Akunyili and former Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Dora Akunyili, represents the values of excellence and resilience associated with Nigerians.

“Njideka, who is also the daughter of our late Dr Chike and Prof. Dora Akunyili, embodies the very best of the excellent Nigerian spirit,” he said.

Drawing from the words of Greek philosopher Aristotle, Obi stressed that excellence is cultivated through consistent effort and commitment.

“As the great philosopher Aristotle rightly noted, excellence is not an accident; it is a habit, the result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution. Njideka’s global success proves that true greatness comes from this consistent, daily dedication to one’s craft.”

He urged Nigerian youths to emulate role models who have attained success through merit and perseverance rather than seeking shortcuts.

“I urge our young people to look up to individuals like her as true role models. Success is not found in shortcuts, but in the relentless pursuit of excellence, honouring one’s roots, and using your gifts to make a global impact.”

Obi further maintained that Nigeria’s future depends on a generation committed to hard work, innovation and integrity.

“If we remain committed to merit and hard work, the new Nigeria we desire will be built by such exemplary minds.

“With focused and hard-working youths, a new Nigeria is possible,” he added.
