Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has donated ₦10 million to support the renovation of Mother of Christ Specialist Hospital in Enugu State following a recent fire outbreak that damaged parts of the health facility.
Obi disclosed this in a statement shared on his X handle after visiting the hospital to assess the extent of the destruction caused by the fire.
During the visit, he inspected several affected sections of the hospital, including the children’s ward, and expressed concern over the impact of the incident on healthcare services.
“Today, I visited the Mother of Christ Specialist Hospital, Enugu State, which was recently affected by a devastating fire incident. During the visit, I inspected the damaged sections of the hospital, including the children’s ward, and made a donation of ₦10 million to support the ongoing renovation efforts,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor commended the Reverend Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the hospital management for their dedication to healthcare delivery and service to humanity.
“I commend the Reverend Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the hospital management for their commitment to healthcare delivery and service to humanity. Their sacrifice and dedication, often carried out with little recognition, remain invaluable to our society,” he stated.
Obi stressed the importance of healthcare and education to national development, noting that no meaningful progress can be achieved if the sectors are neglected.
“Healthcare and education are among the most critical needs of any nation. No meaningful development can occur where these sectors are neglected. It is, therefore, imperative that we continue to support institutions and individuals working tirelessly to provide quality healthcare and educational services to our people,” he said.
He also encouraged the management of the hospital not to be discouraged by the setback, urging collective support for institutions working to improve the welfare of citizens.
“I encourage the management not to relent in their noble mission despite the challenges they face. As a society, we must collectively invest in and strengthen facilities for healthcare, education, and poverty alleviation,” Obi added.
The donation is expected to assist ongoing efforts to restore the affected sections of the hospital and ensure the continuation of healthcare services for residents and surrounding communities.
Obi concluded his message with his familiar call for national renewal, saying, “A new Nigeria is POssible.”
