Police Arrest Suspected Tinubu Voice Impersonator, Detain Social Media User Over Abuja Security Alarm

Nigeria Police Force has arrested a man identified as Ifechukwu Dennis for allegedly impersonating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through the use of a fake voice recording used to deceive unsuspecting members of the public.

Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed the arrest in a post on X on Thursday, revealing that the suspect was apprehended in Benin City by a special police team operating under the Inspector-General of Police.

According to Onanuga, the suspect allegedly created and circulated an audio recording designed to sound like President Tinubu’s voice, which was reportedly used to target unsuspecting victims.

“The IGP crack team has arrested Ifechukwu Dennis who originated the fake voice that he passed on to his gullible targets as President Tinubu’s voice. Dennis was arrested in Benin. The police will issue an official statement,” Onanuga wrote.

In a related development, the presidential aide also announced the arrest of another Nigerian accused of circulating a social media post that allegedly raised concerns about security in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

Onanuga said the police action demonstrates a firm stance against what authorities consider irresponsible use of social media platforms.

“The police have also arrested this Nigerian who made an alarming post about Abuja’s security, spreading fear among citizens. By arresting him, the police have sent the clear message that reckless users of the social media won’t go Scot free,” he added.

The police are yet to release an official statement detailing the circumstances surrounding both arrests, the specific allegations against the suspects, and any charges that may be filed.

The development comes amid growing concerns over the spread of misinformation, impersonation, and unverified security-related content on social media platforms across the country.
