Residents of Asaba, Delta State, may have a reason to feel safer after police operatives arrested a suspected armed robber and recovered dangerous weapons linked to a criminal gang operating in the area.
The Delta State Police Command said the 26-year-old suspect, identified as Sunday Nimel, was arrested during an intelligence-led operation carried out by the CP Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT), Ughelli.
Police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, said the suspect was picked up on October 7, 2026, at about 10:30pm, following credible information and collaboration with local vigilantes.
According to the command, Nimel was allegedly a member of an armed robbery syndicate responsible for several residential robbery operations in Asaba and neighbouring communities.
Following his arrest and interrogation, police operatives traced a hideout near Okpanam City Gate, where they recovered an AK-47 rifle, three rounds of live ammunition and two locally made cut-to-size guns.
The recovery, police said, was part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks and prevent further attacks on residents.
Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel E. Erale, praised the officers involved in the operation, describing the arrest as a result of effective intelligence gathering and teamwork.
He assured residents that the command would continue to intensify operations against criminals while urging members of the public to provide useful information that could assist security agencies.
The police said investigations into the activities of the suspected robbery gang are still ongoing.
