Anambra State Police Command has launched a manhunt for suspected gunmen over the killing of five persons in Idemili and Dunukofia Local Government Areas of the state on Monday.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Superintendent of Police (SP), Tochukwu Ikenga, made this known on Monday in Awka, during a press briefing.
“Our operatives are currently at the scene. The police has launched an investigation into the attacks and working to apprehend the perpetrators.
“As soon as I get more facts I will get back to you,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the attacks were launched simultaneously at 8am in Abatete in Idemili and 8.45am in Ukpo, Dunukofia on Monday.
Some community leaders, who pleaded anonymity in Abatete community in Idemili local government area, told journalists that the assailants first shot at the security personnel attached to the President General (PG) of the community.
They said that three security men were gunned down by the suspects who operated like commandos.
The community leaders said that the PG of the community who sustained serious injuries from the gun shots of the unidentified gunmen was already receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
Other residents of the area called for adequate security in the area.
Similarly, some unidentified gunmen attacked the Ukpo Community in Dunukofia Local Government Area, killing one vigilante operative and a motorcyclist at the Ukpo roundabout.
