Senate Clears ₦403.1bn Police Trust Fund

Senate has approved a combined ₦403.1 billion for the Nigerian Police Trust Fund to strengthen security operations and improve policing across the country.

The approved allocation comprises ₦170.1 billion for the 2025 fiscal year and ₦233 billion for the 2026 fiscal year, covering personnel, capital projects and overhead costs.

Lawmakers said the funding is expected to provide the Nigeria Police Force with modern equipment, improved infrastructure, training and other operational resources needed to tackle terrorism, kidnapping and other violent crimes.

The approval comes at a time when Nigerians are demanding stronger security measures in response to the growing wave of insecurity in several parts of the country.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has forwarded a bill to the Senate seeking to repeal the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, and replace it with a new Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2026.

The proposed legislation includes the creation of a Criminal Justice Monitoring Council to supervise the implementation of the law in courts within the Federal Capital Territory and other federal courts nationwide.

According to the President, the bill is intended to address procedural gaps, speed up the administration of justice and improve the effectiveness of Nigeria’s criminal justice system.

The Senate has referred the proposed legislation to its Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for further legislative consideration.
