World Cup: France Cruise Past Sweden 3-0 as Mbappe Nets Brace

France eased into the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a comfortable 3-0 win over Sweden on Tuesday night as Kylian Mbappe scored twice and Michael Olise continued his impressive tournament with two more assists.

The French had been on top for most of the first half before finally taking the lead in first-half stoppage time. Mbappe finished off a well-worked move in the 45th minute to send France into the break with the advantage.

Bradley Barcola made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute after Olise picked him out with another smart pass, putting France firmly in control.

Mbappe got his second of the night in the 76th minute, latching onto another through ball from Olise before finishing calmly to seal the victory.

The brace took Mbappé’s tally to six goals at this year’s World Cup and 18 in World Cup history, leaving him just one behind Lionel Messi’s total of 19.

Olise was just as important to France’s win. His two assists against Sweden took his tally to five at the tournament, the highest by any player so far. The Bayern Munich midfielder has quietly become one of France’s most reliable creators, with his passing and decision-making playing a big part in the team’s attacking play.

Sweden had a few spells of possession but never really looked like getting back into the game as France stayed organised and took their chances when they came.

The result sends Didier Deschamps’ men into the Round of 16, where they will meet Paraguay for a place in the quarter-finals. On this form, France will take plenty of confidence into that tie.
