The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has extended its N66 per litre petrol discount programme until October 31, 2026, as part of efforts to reduce the impact of rising fuel costs on Nigerians.
The company said the discount, which started on October 1 as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, will continue across all NNPC Retail stations nationwide.
NNPC explained that the measure was introduced to provide temporary relief to customers following the increase in global crude oil prices caused by the Middle East crisis.
The company said it understands the challenges faced by families, commuters and businesses due to higher petrol prices.
In a statement issued on Friday by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, NNPC said it remains committed to supporting efforts by the Federal Government to ease economic pressure on Nigerians.
“Before the announcement, NNPC Limited had introduced a sales discount on 1 October 2026 to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary. This will now continue until 31 October 2026 across NNPC Retail stations nationwide,” the statement said.
NNPC, however, stressed that the discount should not be seen as a return of fuel subsidy.
“This discount is a customer relief initiative and does not represent the reintroduction of petroleum subsidy,” the company stated.
The oil company also clarified that the discount only applies to NNPC Retail outlets and does not amount to a new national petrol price or a change in the current market-based pricing system.
NNPC urged Nigerians to ignore claims that the initiative means subsidy has been restored, adding that it will continue to ensure steady fuel supply and responsible customer service.
The company said the move reflects its commitment to working with the government and stakeholders to provide practical support during a period of global economic uncertainty.
The Federal Government had removed petrol subsidy in 2023, leading to changes in fuel pricing as prices became influenced by global crude oil trends and foreign exchange conditions. The latest discount is aimed at offering short-term relief without reversing the policy.
