Manchester United have reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos in a deal worth £50 million, with the player set to undergo a medical within the next 24 hours before completing the move.
The agreement sees United match Chelsea’s asking price, while Chelsea will also retain a 10 per cent sell on clause. Santos is expected to sign a contract until June 2031 on Wednesday, paving the way for an official announcement.
The move is more than another big-money transfer. It is an early sign of the direction Michael Carrick wants to take Manchester United.
For several seasons, United have searched for the right balance in midfield. Santos arrives with a reputation for combining industry with quality on the ball. He is comfortable receiving possession under pressure, breaks up opposition attacks, carries the ball forward with purpose and has an eye for goal from midfield.
Those qualities make him a natural fit for Carrick’s plans. The United manager is looking to build a side capable of controlling matches through possession while matching opponents physically, and Santos offers both energy and composure in the middle of the park. At just 21, he also gives the club a player who can grow into a leading role over the coming years.
His arrival is expected to intensify competition in midfield. Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte, Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes will all have to fight for places, giving Carrick greater depth and flexibility as United prepare for a demanding campaign.
The transfer also reflects a shift in United’s recruitment strategy. Rather than relying on established stars nearing the twilight of their careers, the club are investing in younger players with the potential to become the backbone of the team for years to come.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the deal with his trademark “Here we go!”, while The Athletic’s David Ornstein also reported that the agreement had been reached. With only the medical and contract signing left to complete, Manchester United are now on the verge of securing one of their biggest additions of the summer.
If Santos develops as expected, United may look back on this deal as more than a £50 million signing. It could prove to be one of the key building blocks in Carrick’s attempt to restore the club as genuine contenders once again.
